Jallikattu (or sallikkattu / ஜல்லிக்கட்டு ), also known as Eru taluvuṭal and manjuvirattu,is a traditional event in which a bull, such as the Pulikulam or Kangayam breeds, is released into a crowd of people, and multiple human participants attempt to grab the large hump on the bull's back with both arms and hang on to it while the bull attempts to escape. Participants hold the hump for as long as possible, attempting to bring the bull to a stop. In some cases, participants must ride long enough to remove flags on the bull's horns.

Palamedu is known for hosting particularly aggressive and powerful native breeds like the Pulikulam and Kangayam.
The Vaadivaasal: The "entry gate" at Palamedu is narrower than others, making the bull’s exit more explosive and challenging for the tamers.
2. Cultural & Religious Identity
The Temple Bull (Koil Kaalai): The event begins with the release of the village temple bull. This bull is considered a deity; per tradition, it is never tamed, and its free run through the arena is a blessing for the village’s prosperity.
Purity of Breed: Palamedu is a primary hub for preserving native breeds like the Pulikulam. Successful "unconquered" bulls are highly sought after for breeding to maintain the strength of the lineage.
Prizes: Winners (both best tamer and best bull owner) receive high-value prizes such as cars, tractors, motorcycles, and gold coins, often sponsored by the state or prominent local figures.
